ANIMAL KINGDOM

>

A publication on the complex relationship between non-human animals and men, inspired by John Berger's "How to loook at animals" and Jacques Derrida's "The Animal That Therefore I Am (more to follow)". The book consists of a selection of depictions of non-human animals from the artist's private archive, taken with the purpose of documenting her random, daily encounters with these. The seemingly innocent images serve as visual proof of photography's supporting role in sustaining the inequalities of power between different species. As we read in the short introduction to the book:

>

The Animal Kingdom is a system created to fulfil the human need to tame reality. By documenting the animals I come across in my everyday life, I am creating a modern animal imaginarium. I have discovered that man cannot deal with animality as such, but only with the human construction of animality. In the Animal Kingdom, as in any kingdom, man is king.
